My very first impression of the AFSC was in the early '70s after a tour in eastern Asia with Uncle Sam. I'd heard or read that the AFSC was not only making prosthetic devices for people injured on both sides in the Vietnam conflict, but also teaching (training, equipping) craftspeople in both Vietnamese communities to do likewise. It struck me as a practical, evenhanded, and sincere gesture in the direction of peace and, as one small outcome, provided me with an opportunity to 'buy in' to the idea with a small contribution.
